Welcome to our new feature: Free Gift - Original Work of Art! This is my Xmas gift for you, and to start this series, I chose a fine watercolor painted over a large woodcut. This complex work is typical for the artist, and shows his depth as well as his wit. Just look at the fish, giving this work its name! Isn't it funny with it's bright eye and the carefully styled teeth? Then look at the parrot: Humorous, too, but somehow a more wise creature.
Did you discover the snake curling around the head of the man at left? Or is it a woman? To me, the person at lower right certainly is a woman, wearing a large brooch at the forehead. Do you notice the resemblance of this brooch to a third eye? The blonde hero with long hair is apparently naked, wearing a large blue ring in his ear. Back in 1985, when this work originated, ear rings for men were not fashion yet. The earlobe appears white on this reproduction, but it is not in the original. Reproducing colors is very tricky, and quite often the best you can achieve is a fair overall impression, almost all colors being wrong in detail. With this sample it is especially true, unfortunately. So if you are the lucky winner of the original, don't be surprised that the original is at the same time considerably softer and has more contrast.
The blue area suggests a large ocean, and the creature looking over the horizon is totally unknown, although it appears in many works. Notice the three beams radiating from that creature. They are obviously typical, as they are associated with them in every case. There is a small moon in the upper right corner, which is, I hate to admit it, cut off by the reproduction. These moons are quite frequent also and have associated with them four beams, of which at least two are visible here. If and only if you like to own this painting, sign up for this month's free gift. And now the Special of the Month: My first woodcut, a wonderful piece. I have it in a small frame on my dinner table for a while now (right behind the candles), and it is just great. Daily joy looking at this little piece, casually during any meal. I love it.
This small woodcut was the first (and for a long time only) work I talked about. It was exiting then to find out something about it, but I don't care so much any more: The work is much more compelling than any words. Try it! You'll find out, too. A nice piece for a first love.
All the best 'til next month. Good Luck. Yours
truly,
